Course Overview

Very few incidents happen without warning. Somebody walks the same route three times. A bag gets set down and its owner steps away. A visitor watches the door rather than the queue.

Officers notice these things all the time. Behavioural detection training turns that noticing into a method you can apply consistently, explain to a supervisor, and defend afterwards.

The course runs across six modules and around five hours, and it suits officers working in retail, healthcare, corporate, construction and public-facing environments. You learn how to build a picture of what normal looks like on your site, how to recognise what deviates from it, and how to act on that without overstepping.

Behaviour, Not Appearance

The obvious question about any behavioural detection course is where observation ends and profiling begins. So the course answers it directly, and the principle behind the answer runs through every module.

You watch behaviour in context. You do not select people by how they look.

That distinction is not just ethics. Under the Equality Act 2010, treating someone differently because of a protected characteristic is unlawful, and an officer who drifts into appearance-based selection creates liability for themselves and for their employer. Retail security has faced serious and justified scrutiny on exactly this point.

The baseline method is what keeps you on the right side of it. A baseline describes a place at a time, how people normally move through this concourse on a Tuesday afternoon. An anomaly is a departure from that pattern. Neither has anything to do with who someone is, which is precisely why the method works and why it stands up when somebody asks you to justify a decision.

However, it is CPD rather than a licence-linked qualification, so it does not by itself satisfy SIA licensing requirements, those come from a licence.
