SIA Licence/ SIA Badge

In the UK, SIA stands for the Security Industry Authority which is the body that regulates and represents the private security industry of the UK. It has various courses from which individuals can choose. The courses are the set standards which one has to take and pass inorder to become a security professional in the UK.

Once the courses are selected, one has to appear for its assessments in order to get a licence from the SIA to work as a security officer in the UK. These courses include a door supervisor course, a security guard course, CCTV operator course, top up training etc.

To renew SIA licence one has to take top up training. This is a course which is of 2 days and it allows individuals to renew their licence. One has to take the emergency aid course with the top up training as well because without it the licence cannot be renewed.

The top up training course outline include:

  1. Principles of Terror Threat Awareness in the Private Security Industry
  2. Principles of Using Equipment as a Door Supervisor in the Private Security Industry.
  3. Applications of Physical Intervention Skills in the Private Security Industry.

Candidates are assessed on the basis of 3 multiple choice exams based on the 3 topics mentioned above. Each exam will assess each topic. Students will get the result within 14 days.

To apply for a SIA badge you have to first complete your desired SIA course, it’s training and assessments. After this you can either visit the SIA office or apply online by filling the application form for the licence. Then you have to upload some of your documents as per the form’s requirements and then pay the SIA licence application fee. The SIA then processes your application which might take more than a  couple of weeks after which you receive the final call of whether your application is approved or not. If approved, your badge will be emailed to you.

Once you have completed the application procedure, the SIA processes your information and checks for authenticity in the information provided by you. If everything that you have provided is true and authentic according to the SIA standards your badge application will get approved. But this process of reviewing your application takes a couple of weeks, usually less than eight weeks and till then you have to wait. Even if your application is rejected, you will still receive an email from SIA declining your application.

The SIA licence expires periodically. Different programs have different periods of expiry. Therefore, you have to keep a check on your licence expiry date and continue to renew it again and again in order to work legally in the private security industry of the UK. The licence is usually valid for 3 years. For renewal of the licence, the SIA top up training is essential.

The SIA exam results are published online within 14 to 15 days of the examination date. Once your exam results are ready you will be informed through email.

For any SIA licence, you have to complete the level 2 first aid course without which you cannot get your SIA licence for any job in the private security industry like with a 6 day door supervisor course you have to take the emergency aid course to get a licence and work legally as a door supervisor in the UK. Even for the renewal of your licence when you take top up training, you have to take the level 2 first aid course as it is a compulsion and without it you cannot apply for licence renewal.
