Course Overview
Security Risk & Threat Assessment Training Online
For security officers, supervisors and managers, built on ISO 31000 risk management principles. Assess threats. Find vulnerabilities. Protect people, property and reputation.
Course Overview
Security Risk & Threat Assessment Training Online teaches you to carry out a complete security risk assessment from start to finish. First you identify the threats, then you survey the site for vulnerabilities, and finally you score the risk, recommend proportionate measures and write a report your client will act on.
So whether you are a security professional moving into risk and assessment work, or a company that needs staff trained to one consistent standard, this CPD-accredited course gives you the method. In short, you get seven modules, around four hours of study, and the Threat, Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (TRVA) process that professional practitioners use every day โ all structured on ISO 31000.
Every security decision traces back to a risk judgement. For example: where officers patrol, which entrances get staffed, and what a client should spend on measures. Most officers build that judgement over years on site. However, very few employers ever teach them the method that turns instinct into a documented assessment they can score, defend and hand over. Therefore, this security risk assessment training closes exactly that gap.
Course Modules
| # | Module | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Foundations of Security Risk | Risk, threat and vulnerability defined; likelihood and impact; the TRVA approach |
| 2 | The Assessment Process & Standards | The ISO 31000 risk process; scoping; intelligence gathering; risk appetite and tolerance |
| 3 | Threat Assessment | Threat sources; terrorism and Martyn’s Law; crime, protest and disorder; hostile reconnaissance; insider threat |
| 4 | Vulnerability Assessment & the Site Survey | Deter, detect, delay, respond; walking a site survey; physical security layers; people and process weaknesses |
| 5 | Analysing & Scoring Risk | Likelihood vs impact; the 5ร5 risk matrix; scoring and prioritising; common scoring mistakes |
| 6 | Treating Risk: Proportionate Measures | The four treatment options; layered measures; residual risk and cost-benefit; the reasonably practicable test |
| 7 | Reporting, Dynamic Risk Assessment & Review | The risk assessment report; the risk register; client communication; dynamic risk assessment; review and audit |
| 8 | Final Assessment | 25 multiple-choice questions including a worked scenario |
Altogether that is seven modules and 33 topics. As a result, you finish able to run a full threat and vulnerability assessment on a live site and produce a report that stands up to scrutiny.
What You’ll Take Away
Every module also produces part of a working toolkit. So you finish with six downloadable templates you can use on a real site the same week, not just a certificate.
| Resource | What it does |
|---|---|
| Security risk assessment template | The 5ร5 risk matrix with worked examples, ready for your own site |
| Threat assessment card | Threat sources, hostile reconnaissance indicators and insider warning signs on one page |
| Site survey & vulnerability checklist | The deter, detect, delay, respond walkthrough for finding gaps like an assessor |
| Risk register template | To log, score, own and track every risk, and prove you are managing it |
| Risk treatment & proportionality card | The four treatment options and the reasonably practicable test |
| TRVA report template | The report structure clients, managers and boards expect |
Why Choose This Course?
Comprehensive and standards-aligned. It covers threat, vulnerability and risk in full, and we built it around ISO 31000 and recognised UK risk management practice. Moreover, security professionals with real-world assessment experience wrote it, rather than adapting a generic health and safety course.
Practical, not theoretical. Most risk assessment training explains the concepts and then stops. Instead, this course hands you the templates and walks you through using them, so the skill transfers to your next shift rather than staying on the page.
Ready for Martyn’s Law. The terrorism threat assessment and vulnerability work that the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025 expects runs right through the course. In particular, Modules 3 and 4 cover it directly.
For individuals. You learn to carry out professional threat and risk assessments, walk a site survey, and write clear, defensible reports. Consequently, you gain the skills that get officers trusted with survey work and put in front of clients.
For security companies. Train your teams for compliance, consistent risk management and current best practice across every site. As a result, you protect both your clients and your reputation. We also arrange group bookings for employers.
Who Should Take This Course?
- Security officers and supervisors moving into risk and assessment duties
- Team leaders and control room operators who need the method behind decisions they already make
- Facilities and premises managers responsible for a site’s security posture
- Event and venue organisers preparing for Martyn’s Law duties
- New security officers building a solid foundation in risk assessment
- Officers seeking promotion who want a demonstrable skill on their CV
- Security companies and managers ensuring best practice across sites
You do not need any prior risk assessment experience. In fact, if you have worked a site you already have the observational instinct โ and this course simply gives you the framework to formalise it.
Martyn’s Law Readiness
Martyn’s Law, the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, received Royal Assent in April 2025, and the Government expects it to come into force in Spring 2027, with the Security Industry Authority acting as regulator.
Qualifying premises and events will therefore need to prepare. Furthermore, larger enhanced-tier sites must assess their vulnerability to terrorism and then take reasonably practicable steps to reduce it.
This course covers exactly that thinking: assessing terrorism threat, identifying vulnerabilities and choosing proportionate measures. However, it does not make a venue compliant, because that duty sits with the responsible person. Rather, it gives your people the method the Act expects them to apply.
Read the official guidance: Martyn’s Law on ProtectUK
Standards and Risk Management Guidance
The course also reflects the standards and legislation that govern security risk assessment in the UK:
- ISO 31000, risk management principles, framework and process. The course structure follows it.
- ISO 31010, risk assessment techniques, behind the scoring in Module 5.
- Martyn’s Law (Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025), assessing terrorism risk at qualifying premises.
- NPSA and ProtectUK guidance, hostile reconnaissance, insider risk and protective security.
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Regulation 3, the duty to carry out and record suitable and sufficient risk assessments.
- BS 7499 and BS 10800, the security services standards and risk-led deployment.
- Equality Act 2010, security measures must stay lawful, proportionate and non-discriminatory.
What This Course Is โ and Isn’t
This is practical continuing professional development, and it carries a CPD-accredited London Security College certificate. However, it is not a regulated or chartered qualification. So if you are heading toward a security risk consultant career, treat it as a strong foundation that complements formal Level 5 and 6 qualifications rather than replacing them.
Its scope is physical and protective security. Cyber and information-security risk, on the other hand, is a separate discipline with its own standards, so see our Cyber Security Awareness course for that.
Assessment and Certification
The course ends with a 25-question multiple-choice assessment, which includes a short worked scenario. The pass mark is 80%, and you get two attempts. If you do not pass at the second attempt, you can then revisit the modules and retake after seven days.
Once you pass, your CPD certificate appears immediately, listing every module you completed, ready for your CV, your CPD record or your employer’s training file. Furthermore, you keep access to the course and all six templates for a full year.
