Course Overview

Every other security post has one job. Front of house has two, and they pull in opposite directions.

The client wants a warm, professional reception, because this is the first thing every visitor sees. But they also want a hard perimeter, because reception is where anyone who should not be in the building will try to walk through. So you deliver both, from one desk, to whoever happens to be standing in front of you.

Front of house security training is about holding that line. You will learn what the role covers and what it does not, how it differs from concierge and reception work, when the job becomes licensable, and how to stay professional at the moment you have to say no.

Where Your Role Starts and Stops

Most front of house problems are boundary problems.

Somebody asks you to sign for a parcel. Then to book a taxi. Then to cover the switchboard for ten minutes, take a meeting room booking, and let a contractor through because they are running late. Every request sounds reasonable on its own. Together they turn a security post into an admin desk, and an officer doing admin is not watching the door.

So Module 2 deals with this directly. You will learn how to read your assignment instructions, how to tell a security duty from a facilities favour, and how to decline the second one without damaging the relationship you need for the first.

The Licensing Question

Does a front of house security officer need an SIA licence?

It depends on what you actually do, not on what your job title says. A receptionist who greets visitors is not carrying out a licensable activity. An officer controlling access in order to guard premises against unauthorised entry generally is. And many real front of house jobs sit somewhere between those two positions.

That matters, because working unlicensed where a licence is required is a criminal offence for the officer and for the employer. So the course sets out where the boundary sits and how to check your own role against it.
