Event Security Officer Training Course

Course Overview

Event security looks straightforward from outside the barrier. But it is not.

First, you are working with tens of thousands of people who arrive together, want the same thing at the same time, and then leave together. You search them at the gate, even though you have no power to search anyone. Then you watch for the one person behaving differently in a crowd where everyone is behaving unusually. And when something goes wrong, it goes wrong at scale and fast.

So event security officer training covers how that job is actually done, at concerts, festivals, sporting fixtures and public gatherings, and it assumes no prior experience.

Why This Matters More From 2027

Martyn’s Law, the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, applies to qualifying events as well as premises, with full enforcement expected in Spring 2027 and the SIA as regulator.

Qualifying events will need public protection procedures, and the people who carry those out on the day are the security officers and stewards on the ground. So event organisers are already working out who they will staff with, and an officer who understands the framework will be the easier hire.

The course covers that ground, and our Martyn’s Law Training goes deeper if you want the full detail.

What You Will Learn

# Module What it covers
1 Introduction to Event Security Operations How an event is structured and who does what; organiser, Safety Advisory Group, security and stewarding; where your role sits
2 Legal Framework and Compliance Licensing conditions; where SIA licensing applies and where stewarding does not; the Equality Act at the gate; Martyn’s Law for qualifying events
3 Crowd Management and Crowd Behaviour How crowds actually move; density, ingress and egress; pinch points and the conditions that make a crowd dangerous; managing rather than controlling
4 Access Control and Search Procedures Searching by consent as a condition of entry, and why you have no power to compel one; conducting a search properly; handling refusal; selecting people without profiling
5 Incident Management and Emergency Response Medical, missing persons, ejections and evacuation; escalation at scale; working with medics, stewards and police
6 Communication, Reporting and Professional Practice Radio discipline in noise; briefings and handovers; incident reports; conduct in front of a crowd and a hundred phone cameras

Two Things Officers Most Often Get Wrong

Searching. You have no power to search anyone. Searching at events works by consent, offered as a condition of entry. If someone refuses, your remedy is to refuse them entry, not to search them regardless. Module 4 covers what you may do, how to do it properly, and how the Equality Act applies to who you select.

Stewarding versus security. Stewarding and licensable security activity are different things, and doing licensable work without a licence is a criminal offence for both the officer and the employer. Module 2 covers where the line falls, which matters if you are moving between steward and officer roles.
