It is continuing professional development, not a regulated or chartered qualification. Frequently Asked Questions
Who is this course for?
SIA security officers, supervisors and managers who want to carry out or contribute to security risk and threat assessments, whether for their own site, a client’s venue, or to step up into survey and supervisory work. It suits both newcomers to risk assessment and experienced officers who want the formal method behind what they already do.
Is this a regulated qualification?
No. It is continuing professional development (CPD). It teaches a real, job-ready skill and is built around ISO 31000 and UK protective-security good practice, but it is not a regulated or chartered qualification. If you are heading toward a security risk consultant career, it is a strong foundation that complements formal Level 5 and 6 qualifications.
Does it cover cyber and information-security risk?
No, by design. This course focuses on physical and protective security risk. Cyber and information-security risk is a different discipline with its own standards; for that, see our Cyber Security Awareness course.
How does it relate to Martyn's Law?
Risk assessment is central to the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025. The course covers assessing terrorism threat, identifying vulnerabilities and choosing reasonably practicable measures, which is exactly the thinking the Act expects at qualifying premises.
How is this different from the risk module in your Security Manager course?
The Security Manager course introduces risk assessment as one part of running an operation. This course is the dedicated deep dive: the full TRVA process, the scoring techniques, proportionate treatment, reporting and dynamic risk assessment, with the templates to do it for real. They complement each other.
Will I get tools I can actually use?
Yes. You get six downloadable tools, including a 5×5 risk assessment template, a site survey checklist, a risk register and a full TRVA report template, so you can run an assessment the day you finish.
Is there a final exam? Can I fail?
There is a 25 question multiple choice quiz, including a short worked scenario. Pass mark is 80%. You get two attempts. If you do not pass at the second attempt, you can revisit the modules and retake after seven days.
