Course Overview

Emergency Response and Fire Safety in Hospitality

For hotel staff, because your occupants are asleep and do not know the way out.

Course Overview

Fire safety in a hotel is a different discipline from fire safety in an office, and the reason is straightforward.

Office workers are awake, sober and familiar with the building. They have walked to the fire exit before. Hotel guests are none of those things. When the alarm sounds at 3am they wake in an unfamiliar room, on a floor they arrived at once, possibly after a long day and a few drinks, sometimes with children, and sometimes unable to use the stairs at all.

So sleeping accommodation sits in the highest-risk category in fire risk assessment, and hospitality staff carry a correspondingly heavier responsibility. Fire safety in hospitality training prepares them for it.

The course covers the fire hazards specific to hotel environments, what the law requires and of whom, how to run an evacuation when the people evacuating do not know the building, and how the systems on your own corridors actually work.

Who Carries the Duty

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, every set of relevant premises in England and Wales has a Responsible Person, and hotels are firmly within scope. That person must ensure a suitable fire risk assessment exists and that the measures it identifies are in place and maintained.

But the Responsible Person is rarely the one on shift at 3am. So the course also covers where your duty sits as a member of staff: what you are expected to know, what you are expected to do, and when you escalate.

The framework also includes the Fire Safety Act 2021 and the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 for certain building types, while Scotland and Northern Ireland operate under separate regimes.

Verify the current legislative position before publishing. This area has changed substantially in recent years and continues to develop.

What You Will Learn

# Module What it covers
1 Introduction to Emergency Response in Hospitality Why sleeping accommodation is the highest-risk category; who does what during an incident; the difference between an office evacuation and a hotel one
2 Fire Safety Fundamentals in Hospitality How fire behaves in corridors and stairwells; the hazards specific to hotels โ€” kitchens, laundry, housekeeping stores, guest smoking, charging devices
3 UK Fire Safety Laws and Compliance The Fire Safety Order 2005 and the Responsible Person; fire risk assessment; the Fire Safety Act 2021 and 2022 Regulations; enforcement and what inspectors look for
4 Emergency Response Procedures The first two minutes; alarm verification and false alarm management; calling the fire service; liaising with crews on arrival
5 Evacuation and Guest Safety Management Waking and moving guests who do not know the building; PEEPs and evacuating people with mobility needs; assembly points and roll call; the guest who will not leave
6 Fire Safety Equipment and Emergency Systems Detection and alarm systems; extinguisher types and when not to use one; fire doors and why propping one open matters; emergency lighting and signage

Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans

In an office you know your staff, so you can plan in advance for anyone who cannot use the stairs unaided.

A hotel does not have that luxury. A guest with mobility needs checks in at 11pm, and unless somebody captures it and passes it on, the night team does not know they are there. That is why PEEPs in hospitality depend on the check-in conversation as much as on the evacuation plan, and Module 5 covers both halves.

Who Should Take This Course

  • Hotel security teams and night porters
  • Front-of-house and reception staff, who hold the arrivals information a PEEP depends on
  • Concierge and guest services
  • Duty managers and supervisors who will take charge during an incident
  • Facilities and maintenance personnel responsible for systems and fire doors
  • New starters and seasonal staff, plus existing employees needing refresher training

How This Compares to Fire Warden Training

Our Fire Warden and Fire Marshal Awareness course covers the marshal role in any workplace. This course covers the hospitality environment, sleeping guests, unfamiliar occupants, night cover and guest management.

Many hotel teams need both: the warden training for the role, this one for the setting.

Beyond Fire

Hotels and hospitality venues are also qualifying premises under Martyn’s Law, and the public protection procedures it requires, evacuation, invacuation and lockdown, build directly on the evacuation discipline taught here. With full enforcement expected in Spring 2027, the two sit naturally together.

What This Course Is

London Security College certifies this course as continuing professional development. It supports compliance with UK fire safety and workplace safety requirements by giving you documented, consistent staff training. However, it does not discharge the Responsible Person’s duties, and it does not replace a fire risk assessment or site-specific induction.
