SIA Door Supervisor Course Birmingham

The SIA Door Supervisor Course Birmingham runs over six days at The Shirley Club, 135 Marshall Lake Road, B90 4RB. Six days in, licence-ready out, with Emergency First Aid taught inside the same week, so there’s no second provider to chase.

Total fee: £350, with £100 to book online and £250 payable at the centre.

Where You’ll Train

Our centre sits in Shirley, on the Solihull side of Birmingham, about seven miles south-east of the city centre.

That’s a short journey, not a different city. Shirley station puts you into Birmingham Moor Street or Snow Hill in around 15 to 20 minutes, with Whitlocks End and Yardley Wood nearby. The Stratford Road bus corridor runs frequent services straight into town through Hall Green and Sparkhill. Driving, you’re minutes from the M42 at Junction 4, with parking on site, which is a good deal easier than six days of city-centre parking.

So whether you’re coming from Birmingham, Solihull, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Walsall, Redditch or Bromsgrove, getting here is straightforward.

Where the Work Is

Birmingham runs one of the largest night-time economies outside London, and Shirley sits between its two halves.

To the north-west, the city centre. Broad Street is one of the busiest licensed strips in the country, and Digbeth’s music venues, clubs and festival spaces have grown fast. Add the Arcadian and Hurst Street, plus the Bullring and Grand Central for retail security, and there’s steady work seven nights a week.

To the east, the events cluster. The NEC, Resorts World, the Utilita Arena and the venues around Birmingham Airport staff security throughout the year, and the exhibition calendar creates constant demand for licensed staff. Solihull’s Touchwood centre adds retail work closer to home.

Three large universities keep the student night-time economy busy from September onwards.

Most door work is filled locally, through agencies and venue managers rather than national job boards. Qualifying in the West Midlands puts you in front of the people doing that hiring.

What the Licence Lets You Do

The Door Supervisor badge is the most flexible front-line licence in the industry, and it covers most security guarding roles too, which a Security Guard licence does not do in reverse.

Pubs, bars and nightclubs. Hotels, restaurants and members’ clubs. Concerts, festivals, arenas and event security. Retail and shopping centres. Construction gates and corporate reception.

Only need retail, office or site work? The SIA Security Guard Course takes four days instead of six. Most learners still choose Door Supervisor, because it opens both.

Course Content

All four mandatory units, taught face to face:

1: Working in the Private Security Industry, licensing law, the legislation governing the industry, health and safety, fire and emergency procedures, incident reporting and record keeping.

2: Working as a Door Supervisor, searching people and property, the law around consent, refusals and ejections, reasonable force, drug awareness, age verification and safeguarding.

3: Conflict Management, recognising triggers early, communication and body language under pressure, de-escalating aggression before it turns physical, and post-incident reporting.

4: Physical Intervention Skills, the legal framework for going hands on, the medical risks of restraint, disengagement, low-level restraint and escorting, and team-based intervention.

Emergency First Aid at Work is included. Primary survey, CPR and defibrillator use, the recovery position, choking, serious bleeding, shock and burns. You leave with both certificates.

Assessment

You sit four multiple-choice examinations and complete one practical assessment during the six days. Mock papers and a revision session run beforehand, so nothing on the final day is unfamiliar.

Practise first with our free SIA Door Supervisor Mock Exams. Results reach you within 14 to 15 working days by email or SMS.

Who Can Book

You must be 18 or over with the right to work in the UK. Bring photo identification, two proofs of address from the last three months, and two passport-size photographs.

No previous security experience is required. The SIA runs its own criminal record checks once you apply, and anyone who has spent six continuous months or more outside the UK in the last five years will need overseas checks too.

Attendance across all six days is mandatory, missing part of the week can invalidate your certificate.
