Course Duration

For novice workers, this is a two-day blended learning course.

CPCS Traffic Marshal (A73) Course

Become a Qualified Plant and Vehicle Marshaller

Our CPCS A73 courses are designed to equip you with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and certification required to operate safely and effectively as a Plant and Vehicle Marshaller on construction and industrial sites.

CPCS Red Card Qualification

Upon successfully completing both the theory and practical tests, candidates will receive a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card, valid for 2 years.

Eligibility Requirements

To take the CPCS A73 course, all candidates must:

  • Hold a valid CITB/NOCN Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test certificate taken within the last 2 years.

Note: Even if your CSCS card is valid, your HS&E test may be out of date. If so, a new test must be completed.

  • Provide original photo identification on the day of testing (e.g. UK driving licence or passport).

Course Schedule

Day 1 – Training

  • Full site induction

  • Introduction to CPCS A73 expectations and marshalling duties

  • Health & Safety legislation relevant to plant and vehicle movement

  • Roles and responsibilities of the marshaller

  • Overview of plant types, risks, and stability considerations

  • Traffic management plans and site work coordination

  • Guided preparation for the CPCS theory test

Day 2 – Practical & Assessment

  • Role-play and hands-on practice, including:

    • Safe positioning techniques

    • Verbal and non-verbal communication methods

    • Preparing sites and plant/vehicles for safe movement

    • Guiding vehicle movements under supervision

  • CPCS Theory Test (verbal questioning)

  • CPCS Practical Test (live vehicle guidance assessment)

Training Method

Training is delivered through a mix of classroom theory and live practical scenarios at our CPCS-approved Test Centre. All instruction and assessments are conducted by certified CPCS trainers and testers.

Test Format

  • Theory Test: Conducted verbally by an accredited CPCS tester

  • Practical Test: Involves guiding a moving vehicle while being observed and assessed on safety and communication

Important Note

We’ve found that candidates perform significantly better when given time to absorb the learning from Day 1. Therefore, we typically allow a short break between Day 1 and Day 2, which improves the overall pass rate to over 90%.
