Module 1 – Aims and learning objectives
Objectives:
Course Aim – The aim of this course is to raise awareness of the risks from working at height so that you understand more about your responsibilities and how to carry out your job role safely.
Learning outcomes:
Your employer must assess the risks that you are exposed to and determine what measures are necessary to eliminate or control those risks so far as reasonably practicable. Awareness training, such as this course, helps to identify and reduce risks.
- The main laws governing work at height
- The key hazards and risks associated with work at height
- The main ways to eliminate or reduce the risks while working at height
- The main considerations when using access equipment
However, it may be necessary to supplement this awareness training with more specific information, training and/or experience to ensure your competence, given the nature of your organisation, your role within it, the tasks you perform and the environment in which you work.

Case study 1
A man was unloading a temporary office unit from a lorry. He was standing on top of the unit to attach a sling from a crane when he fell onto the road, suffering fatal head injuries.
Case study 2
A man was carrying a double-glazed glass unit while climbing a ladder. As he almost reached to top, the ladder suddenly slipped against the door frame it was leaning on.
The man fell and crushed his hand between the wall and the glass unit. He had to have three steel rods inserted to hold the bones together.
Case study 3
A man had been a painter and decorator for 26 years when he fell 26 feet off a ladder. The impact of the fall broke every bone on the left side of his body and left him unable to work for five years.
